"I just hope for the long-term future of our country that we can make our higher education competitive enough to retain the people we’re going to need: scientists and engineers and “doers” – not just MBAs and English majors."

Let me tell you, I deal with "college-educated" people on a daily basis, many of whom have a MAcc and it absolutely destroys any shred of faith in humanity I had remaining to realize that some of these people cannot complete remedial tasks such as using a phone, figuring out the Internet, or completing an online purchase.

Not to knock MBAs and English majors but there has to be some meat between their ears or we're going to end up with a country that is all bark and no brains. Or is it too late?

You know who I am talking about. "Professionals" that don't know the difference between your and you're.

My mentor and I have had many the discussion about the dumbing down of America and the higher education scam. It's very real and very frightening. Look around you. You are exactly right, it's a chilling future scenario but one that has been years if not generations in the making. We only have ourselves to blame.

Entirely true, especially in the city.

On the other hand, in my state the public schools are chronically underfunded and have never been adequate academically; many are unsafe. In the neighborhood where we lived when my child hit school age, to be kindergarten-ready your kid needed to know how to use a knife and a club. One neighbor's very bright child passed into the second grade without knowing how to read: he simply listened to the teacher read the assignments aloud, memorized them, and then recited them when he "read" them to his parents at home. They figured out the game when they realized he couldn't read the words on traffic signs and billboards.

You'd be an irresponsible parent to send your child into an unsafe environment, and IMHO it's irresponsible to send your child to a school that's incapable of providing the most basic education. Hereabouts, if you can't afford private school, then you're forced to move to the far-flung suburbs, where newer schools are temporarily OK (if you overlook academics). It's not right, it's not fair, and it's not good for America...but it's the way things are.

I heard an equally ridiculous statement today on CNBC--"How on earth will we attract top talent to turn these companies around if we limit their pay?" Hello??? The top talent that drove these businesses into needing federal funds to survive?

If we had let the free market bankrupt these companies instead of giving them taxpayer money, you'd see the free market working to reduce the number of banks, and therefore bank jobs. That would naturally reduce the pay to "top talent" as there would be more "top talent" looking for jobs than there would be jobs.

You can't have it both ways.
